Urban Initiatives was engaged by the City of Darebin to create a new frontage to the Preston City Oval which, being enclosed to the street boundary, had been rendered inaccessible to the community for many decades.

The first stage of this project saw a new linear parkland and planted promenade created through the significant setback of boundary fencing and reallocation of metres of park frontage to usable, accessible space. Principle entry points were widened and re-conceived as mini community plazas, connected to existing footpaths via generously designed stairs and ramps.

The permeability of the formerly-fenced Oval in a part of Melbourne distinctly lacking open space, returned the landscape to the public realm and repositioned it as a new green ‘gateway’ through to central Preston.
