Katherine is a Senior Landscape Architect who joined the Urban Initiatives team in January 2018. Hitting the ground running, she has since led the delivery of multiple projects including the Schematic Design and Town Planning phases for the Abbotsford Convent Entry Precinct, the new Phillip Island Penguin Parade and Boardwalk Experience, St Kilda Foreshore Missing Link and Yaluk Langa for Heide Museum of Modern Art.
She has experience in project design, delivery and stakeholder management, in particular cultural engagement and co-design, across projects of all scales from residential through to large-scale developments. Between 2008 and 2013 Katherine worked as in-house Landscape Architect for the Shrine of Remembrance. Katherine collaborated with the City of Melbourne and Citywide services for the delivery of both infrastructure and sensitive memorial-design projects in consultation with veterans. For the Shrine, she designed and project-managed the installation of the Ex-Servicewomen’s Memorial Garden and the Remembrance Garden for the Post 45 Memorial. Katherine’s experience at the Shrine and now at Urban Initiatives, renders her at ease with the complexities of emotive, high-visitation sites with significant natural assets, and negotiating the competing requirements of multiple stakeholders.
Katherine holds a Masters in Landscape Architecture from London’s Greenwich University. This qualification followed fifteen years of work as an opera singer, where her performances included roles for The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Opera Australia. Upon moving back to Australia and prior to her engagement at Urban Initiatives, she also worked for Rush/Wright, Realm Studios and Tract. As Director of her eponymous practice Katherine designed and oversaw construction of gardens for award-winning houses by Melbourne architects including Kennedy Nolan, Clare Cousins and Andrew Simpson.
Katherine’s background in music and the arts, a keen love of nature, interest in materiality and proficiency in planting design makes her of particular value in projects requiring a sensibility to culture, community, heritage and nature. For Katherine, the understanding that creativity and the arts have the potential to contribute to greater social well-being has always been an inspiration.
