Goulburn Street Primary is a heritage listed school which includes a 1943 building by Tasmanian Architect, Sydney Blythe. Sensitivity was required in relation to the streetscape, the Sydney Blythe structure and the major trees on the site. Limited space necessitated careful integration of the new elements.
The multi-purpose building provides an alternative entry to the school that effectively links views to two large oak trees while revealing a broad vista toward the city. Pre-cast planters, and seamless pavement materials wrap around the entry creating a playful and inviting welcome.
Working closely with the project architect, two new courtyard spaces were created that enable disability access on a steeply sloping site. Both courtyards are well protected and exploit their northern orientation to good effect.
