Birrarung Marr awarded

banner-3Urban Initiatives’ work on Birrarung Marr Upper Terrace was Highly Commended in the Landscape Design Category of the BPN Sustainability Awards recently.

Established in 2006, the BPN Sustainability Awards were created to encourage and reward Australia’s best practice in sustainable building and architecture design. Borne out of the need to recognise and promote genuine progress in green building practice, it remains the industry’s strongest independent program recognising ecologically sustainable building and design that go beyond the tick-a-box approach.

Entries were of an exceptionally high level this year, and the jury said of the project:

“Inner city land restoration projects usually have a high level of difficulty, and Birrarung Marr is no exception. The project partners have achieved a very technical standard, and at the same time improved both the aesthetic of the Yarra bank and the amenity of this important site.”

The project manages to capture, treat and reuse over 35 million litres of harvested stormwater on a relatively small footprint. Even better, this facility is seamlessly integrated into a valuable public park. Reused water is used to keep the park green, and also to improve the health of the avenues of trees growing along the Yarra River.
